Turin is a city in Northern Italy with a rich history and vibrant culture. Situated on the western bank of the Po River, the city of Turin has around 843,514 residents, while the broader Turin metropolitan area has approximately 2.2 million inhabitants. To this day, Turin remains a major European crossroad for industry, commerce, and trade. It forms an industrial triangle along with Milan and Genoa.
TIPS4PED will focus on a district consisting of an area of approximately 260,000 m2, encompassing the main university campus of the Politecnico di Torino. Within this area, several other buildings of interest are located: (1) Cittadella Politecnica; (2) Energy Center; (3) IREN Thermal Plant, which supports the district heating network operations during peak demand; (4) University Dormitories; (5) 2 Municipal buildings (Sports department and the employment centre offices); (6) some private residential and commercial buildings. The activities of implementation, monitoring and operation of PED solutions will focus on 2 test areas:
At the district level, it encompasses about 1,000 inhabitants and 1,000 residential students + 30,000 enrolled students, 58 buildings, and an estimated 1.7 MW rooftop photovoltaic capacity installed.
Within the project, the selected district will test the 3 TIPS4PED IAP tools (Feasibility, Design/roadmapping and Operational), aiming to pave the way to the realisation of the first PED in Turin and showcase the potential for increasing renewable power installed capacity in densely populated urban zones and buildings with limited surface area. The Municipality is expecting to have synergic communication with stakeholders, involving local students and inhabitants and building upon ongoing initiatives, like Torino City Lab and Torino Social Impact. After TIPS4PED, the city aims to further enlarge the pilot district and improve its performances and to use the IAP for other districts to upscale the project’s results and extend the PED approach from the small scale to the district and the city scale.
