On 26 March 2026, the TIPS4PED project contributed to the LEGOFIT webinar on BIM Models and Digital Twins, joining a panel of experts to explore how digital solutions are shaping the future of sustainable urban development. The online session brought together participants from across Europe for an interactive exchange on methodologies, real-world applications, and practical tools for climate-neutral districts.
Representing TIPS4PED, project coordinator Benedetta Barchi (RINA Consulting) presented the project’s approach to supporting the development of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). Her presentation offered insights into how cities can better navigate the complexity of urban planning by using data-driven tools and integrated digital solutions.
Cities today face a range of interconnected challenges, from high energy consumption and carbon emissions to fragmented decision-making processes and the need to actively involve citizens in the energy transition. TIPS4PED addresses these challenges by developing a Digital Twin-based Integrated Assessment Platform (IAP), designed to support municipalities and stakeholders throughout the entire planning and implementation process.
At the heart of the project is the idea of making complex decisions simpler and more transparent. The platform brings together data from buildings, energy systems, and mobility, allowing users to simulate different scenarios and assess their impact over time. This helps cities identify the most effective pathways towards achieving energy-positive districts.
During the webinar, participants were introduced to the three main phases supported by the platform. In the initial feasibility phase, the tool helps identify urban areas with the highest potential to become PEDs, based on key indicators such as emissions reduction, renewable energy integration, and cost efficiency. This early-stage insight is crucial for guiding investment and planning decisions.
The design and roadmapping phase then enables cities to explore different intervention strategies and define clear, step-by-step plans for implementation. By using digital twin technology, stakeholders can test scenarios in a virtual environment before applying them in the real world.
Finally, in the operational phase, digital twins are used to monitor district performance in real time. By combining sensor data with predictive modelling, the platform supports continuous optimisation, helping cities maintain energy performance, reduce emissions, and adapt to changing conditions.
The presentation also highlighted the project’s demonstration activities. The platform will be tested in the Lighthouse City of Turin and replicated in follower cities Cork, Budapest, and Kozani, ensuring that the solutions developed are both practical and adaptable to different urban contexts.

The webinar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where participants engaged directly with the speakers on topics such as data integration, scalability, and implementation challenges. The discussion underscored the growing importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in advancing digital solutions for sustainable cities.
